The SJHS Pediatric
Dental Center at St. Joseph Hospital for Specialty Care
in South Providence, RI opens with three dental operatories

1997 . . . |
Providence Smiles Program begins as a dental sealant program
in 10 public elementary schools in Providence, RI. 10
Providence public schools with support received from Providence
School Department, RI Departments of Health and Human
Services, The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, The Rhode
Island Foundation and the Health and Education Leadership
for Providence Coalition.

Daniel J. Kane, DMD joins SJHS as Dental Director.
The 6th operatory is established at the SJHS Providence
Dental Center.

2001 . . . |
The Providence Smiles model was replicated at three schools
in the City of Pawtucket, with funding support received
by The Rhode Island Foundation.
Dr. Kane participates on the Special
(RI) Senate Commission to study and make recommendations
on ways to maintain and expand access to quality oral
health care for all Rhode Island residents, chaired
by Lt. Governor Elizabeth H. Roberts (formerly RI Senator).

2002 . . . |
Providence Smiles expands to provide oral exams for Providence
Head Start and Children's Network program participants
(children under the age of 5).
SJHS Providence Dental Center expands to its 7th and
8th operatories.

2003 . . . |
Rhode Island's first and only pediatric dentistry residency
program is created through a partnership with Lutheran
Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York in 2003. This partnership
nearly doubled the capacity to serve disadvantaged Rhode
Island pediatric populations. In 2002, there were 7,990
recorded visits to SJHS Pediatric Dental Center, compared
to that of 16,287 visits recorded in 2007.
The SJHS Pediatric Dental Center begins full-mouth
pediatric oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia
at the Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) at Our Lady of Fatima
Hospital in North Providence.

2004 . . . |
SJHS opens a satellite dental center with two operatories
in the City of Pawtucket to serve the children in this
region who need further oral care in a convenient and
accessible location. Support received from the U.S. Centers
for Disease Control, Congressman Patrick Kennedy, the
June Rockwell Levy Foundation, and the Roy T. Morgan Foundation.

2005 . . . |
SJHS Pediatric Dental Center graduates the first two pediatric
dental residents. The residency program expands to accept
four pediatric dental residents.
A 9th operatory is established at the SJHS Providence
Dental Center, funded in part by a grant from Tom's
of Maine.

2006 . . . |
The SJHS Providence Dental Center adds its 10th and 11th
operatories. Funding for the 10th operatory provided by
Delta Dental of RI.
The SJHS Pawtucket Dental Center expands to three
operatories.

2007 . . . |
Dr. Kane is named Head Start Dental Home State Leader
for the American Academy of Pediatric Dentists.
SJHS Pediatric Dental faculty expands to include 3 additional
pediatric dentists, one general dentist with expertise
in special needs patient treatment, one dental anesthesiologist
and a part-time orthodontist.
SJHS and the RI Department of Health sponsors and
presents the first 2-day pediatric mini-residency focusing
on issues relating to pediatric dentistry and oral health.

2008 . . . |
First Smiles (Infant/Toddler Oral Health Program) is launched.
The first of its kind in the State of Rhode Island, First
Smiles provides dental care for children under the age
of 3.
Providence Smiles expands to all Providence public
schools. Providence Smiles/Head Start expands its scope
of services to include cleanings and fluoride treatments.
The Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) at Our Lady of Fatima
Hospital expands to three operatories, with support
received by CVS Caremark Charitable Trust.
The SJHS Providence Dental Center prepares for its
12th operatory, with funding provided by Delta Dental
of RI.
SJHS Dental Faculty presents at Annual American Academy
of Pediatrics meeting in Boston, Massachusetts.
An additional SJHS pediatric dentist joins SJHS Pediatric
Dental Faculty.
